R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, February 22, 2005, is indeed a memorable day at the State Capitol, as proud residents of Goliad County gather in Austin to celebrate their region's singular stature in the history and culture of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Home to at least four Native American tribes, the area now known as Goliad County was first settled by Europeans in 1749, although such legendary explorers as Cabeza de Vaca and LaSalle may have visited the area in the centuries before; and WHEREAS, One of the first 23 counties established by the first Congress of the Republic of Texas, Goliad is historically closely associated with the struggles and triumphs of the Texas Revolution, and the first Declaration of Texas Independence was signed in the town of Goliad in 1835; and WHEREAS, Early Goliad County was known as an enclave of freewheeling frontiersmen, but civilizing influences soon set the county on the path toward the stability and prosperity its inhabitants enjoy today, and this inspiring success story is in many ways the story of Texas itself; and WHEREAS, Residents of Goliad County take justifiable pride in the area's colorful past, and among the historic landmarks to be found throughout the county are Fannin Plaza Park, the Goliad County Courthouse, the Masonic Temple, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; and WHEREAS, The county's rich historical significance, combined with the winning warmth of its present-day inhabitants, has made it a popular destination among tourists from around the state, who enjoy such events as the seasonal Goliad Market Days and the annual Missions Tour de Goliad, a fun-filled bicycle ride through the countryside; and WHEREAS, Now home to thriving businesses and friendly residents, Goliad County is possessed of both a unique history and a bright future, and it is indeed fitting at this time to reflect on its many outstanding attributes; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 22, 2005, as Goliad County Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the members of the visiting delegation for an enjoyable and memorable visit.
