H.R. No. 274


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, University of Texas at Austin sophomore Andra Kareem Manson captured national championships in the outdoor and indoor high jump during the 2004 NCAA track and field season, highlighting an already exceptional athletic career; and WHEREAS, A Brenham native, Mr. Manson won the outdoor title with a personal-best leap of 7 feet, 7.25 inches and also took home outdoor gold medals at the TCU Invitational, the Penn Relays, and the Big 12 Championships; he nabbed the indoor championship by clearing 7 feet, 3.75 inches, and won or tied for first in every indoor meet in which he competed; and WHEREAS, Mr. Manson enjoyed an impressive career as a high jumper at Brenham High School, twice winning the state 4A championship and thrice taking the district championship; he set the Texas Relays high school meet record by leaping 7 feet, 3.25 inches as a senior, and in 2002 he cleared 7 feet, 7 inches to win the World Junior Championship in Kingston, Jamaica, and was named Track and Field News' Male High School Athlete of the Year; and WHEREAS, With two national championships and two Big 12 championships to his credit, Andra Manson is poised for greatness in the sport of track and field; he has represented The University of Texas at Austin with dignity and grace on the athletic field, and he remains a source of great pride to his family and friends in Brenham and in Austin; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize Andra Kareem Manson for his significant achievements in the sport of track and field, and commend him for his dedication to excellence as a student-athlete at The University of Texas at Austin; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Manson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
