H.R. No. 277


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of Roy Evans on February 5, 2005, the world has lost a lifelong champion of working people and a relentless battler of injustice in all its forms, and we join his family and friends in mourning their loss; and WHEREAS, A workingman from an early age, Mr. Evans held a series of jobs over the course of his life that ranged from selling magazines and tending livestock to serving as president of the Texas AFL-CIO, and his conviction that every job is possessed of dignity if done well was reflected in his own approach to his work, no matter what it was; and WHEREAS, During the turbulent period of the 1960s, Mr. Evans was an eloquent and compelling voice for the workers of Texas, representing his compatriots in negotiations over workers' compensation and later serving as a member of the Industrial Accidents Board; and WHEREAS, Mindful that the inspiring and colorful history of the labor movement be kept alive for future generations, Mr. Evans also served as the first board president of the Texas Labor Movement Foundation, which collects the oral histories of union members in Texas; and WHEREAS, In his journey through the 20th century, Roy Evans himself became a living symbol of the labor movement, and although his death has saddened us, his spirited advocacy of the poor, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised will shine on in the work of his brothers and sisters in unions across the Lone Star State and throughout the world; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Roy Evans and extend sincere sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Evans.
