R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and good friends celebrate the life
and mourn the passing of William Holland Rutherford, Jr., of El
Paso, who died on July 25, 2004, at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rutherford was born on May 14, 1927, and began a
nearly 30-year tenure with the U.S. Armed Forces when he joined the
U.S. Navy during World War II; he switched to the U.S. Army and
served his country in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired
from the military in 1971 as a command sergeant major; and
WHEREAS, Following his return to civilian life, he was a
patrol sergeant with the El Paso County Sheriff's Department before
becoming the first chief of police for the newly incorporated
Horizon City, a position he held until his retirement 10 years
later; and
WHEREAS, This community-minded individual was actively
involved with a number of civic organizations, each of which
greatly benefited from his participation; a charter and life member
of VFW Post 10354 and a member of American Legion Post 0598, he also
gave of his time and talents to Lions and Kiwanis Clubs, the El
Maida Shrine Temple, and John T. Bean Masonic Lodge 1333, and he had
been the volunteer director of Oz Glaze Senior Citizens Center in
Horizon City; and
WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known William Holland
Rutherford, Jr., will remember his love of family and community;
although his presence is gone from us now, his spirit lives on in
the hearts of the many people who were fortunate to know him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the life of William
Holland Rutherford, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members
of his family: to his wife, Bessie Marie; to his sons, William and
Dennis; to his daughters, Christine, Brenda, and Tracy; to his
brothers, Richard, Joseph, and John; to his sister, Diane; to his
grandchildren, Tracy, Trix, Dennis, William, Roy, Percy, Brian,
Josef, Jimmy, Lorinda, Michelle, Michael, and Korina; to his
great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kevin, Meagan, Alex, Ramsey, Antony,
Bailey, Ryan, Sophia, Hendrick, Ashley, Alex, Emily, Kayla,
Savannah, Cheyanne, and Jordyn; and to the other family and friends
of this beloved man; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William
Holland Rutherford, Jr.
