R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Football legend Emmitt Smith is retiring after 15
seasons in the National Football League, concluding a remarkable
career that set new standards for gridiron excellence, and this
occasion offers a fitting opportunity to honor this esteemed
athlete for his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, The all-time NFL rushing leader with 18,355 yards,
Mr. Smith also holds the records for career rushing touchdowns with
164 and career rushing attempts with 4,409; he is the first player
in NFL history to record five consecutive seasons of at least 1,400
rushing yards, and he displayed incredible consistency by reeling
off 11 straight seasons of at least 1,000 rushing yards, another NFL
record; and
WHEREAS, Drafted in 1990 by the Dallas Cowboys, Mr. Smith
enjoyed a stellar career at the University of Florida and still
holds 58 school records; an NCAA All-American, he was drafted by
Dallas with the 17th pick of the first round and joined quarterback
Troy Aikman and wide receiver Michael Irvin to form an offensive
juggernaut that went on to dominate professional football in the
1990s by winning three Super Bowl championships; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith's individual accolades include eight Pro
Bowl selections, the 1993 NFL MVP Award, and the Super Bowl XXVIII
MVP Award; he led the league in rushing four times and set the pace
for touchdowns in 1992, 1994, and 1995, when he crossed the goal
line an impressive 25 times; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with a passion for the game that was evident
in both his game-day intensity and his unrivaled work ethic, Emmitt
Smith is retiring as one of professional football's all-time
greatest players; he will be remembered by fans throughout the
world not only for his abilities on the field, but also for his
myriad contributions to helping young men and women achieve their
dreams, and his legacy as an athlete and humanitarian will endure
for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Emmitt Smith on his retirement from
the National Football League and commend him for his extraordinary
career; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
