R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable Elliott Naishtat is celebrating his 60th birthday on February 15, 2005, despite any argument, documentation, or other dubious evidence that he may provide to the contrary, and the members of this chamber are proud to recognize this momentous event; and WHEREAS, Known by constituents and friends as the Hebrew Hammer, champion of the poor and needy, Representative Naishtat is in the midst of his eighth legislative session since winning election as representative of House District 49 in November of 1990; during his notable tenure he has been recognized by numerous state and national organizations, inc1uding AARP, the American Foundation for the Blind, the American Cancer Society, the Texas Council on Family Violence, and the Texas Public Health Association; he was also named one of Texas' Ten Best Legislators by the State Bar Family Law Section; and WHEREAS, A native New Yorker and a mensch in every sense of the word, Elliott--two l's, two t's, thank you very much--has lived in Texas for some 30 years, which makes him half Texan; he attended Queens College before heading to Austin, where he earned his master's degree in social work and his law degree from The University of Texas at Austin; and WHEREAS, Few individuals can rival Elliott's uncanny ability to procure complimentary food by attending the season's various social and political events; in fact, on more than one occasion since taking office he has eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the occasional between-meal snack, at someone else's expense; friends claim that he wouldn't have salt and pepper in his house if it weren't for the tiny packets packaged with the plastic cutlery offered at free barbecue dinners; and WHEREAS, In his defense, however, it must be stated that Elliott always provides the gefilte fish at Pesach Seder--and not the cheap, low-salt kind, either; only the finest fish cakes will do when celebrating Passover, but you better arrive early if you want more than one piece; and WHEREAS, It's safe to say that Elliott has not overwhelmed his friends with either his athletic prowess or his decision-making skill on the softball field; to put it gently, it's highly unlikely that the Mets will be offering him a job as third-base coach any time soon; but when it comes to making decisions on the floor of the House, Representative Naishtat has consistently honored the desires and wishes of his constituents; and WHEREAS, Sixty years young and showing no signs of slowing down, Elliott Naishtat is a credit to the field of public service, and it is with the utmost respect and honor that the members of this chamber wish him Mazel Tov on the occasion of his 60th birthday; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th birthday of the Honorable Elliott Naishtat and extend to him best wishes for a truly memorable birthday celebration.
