R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, As board chair and chief executive officer of SBC Communications, Inc., Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., of San Antonio has helped to reshape the telecommunications landscape with his keen judgment of industry trends; and WHEREAS, A native of Ennis, Mr. Whitacre graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering; in 1963, he began his career as a facility engineer with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Lubbock; 20 years later, he was in charge of the company's Kansas division, and thereafter, moved to corporate headquarters, where he served as group president, vice president-revenues and public affairs, vice chair, chief financial officer, president, and chief operating officer; and WHEREAS, In 1990, this experienced professional was named SBC's board chair and chief executive officer, and since then, he has led the company through a period of unprecedented growth, including a series of mergers and acquisitions; most recently, he negotiated the creation of the nation's largest telecommunications company with the acquisition of AT&T; and WHEREAS, Under his leadership, SBC has been named the world's most admired telecommunications company by Fortune magazine for six consecutive years, and it has become a complete telecommunications giant, with wireless, broadband, land-line, and satellite services; and WHEREAS, A respected leader, Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., is consistently looking to the future and adapting to the modern world's new demands, and he truly merits special recognition for his accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., on his extraordinary professional achievements and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Whitacre as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
