R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For a quarter of a century Carol Ann Nelson of Austin has served the young musicians of McCallum High School as their band director, and to commemorate her 25th anniversary she is being honored by an admiring circle of current and former students, assistant directors, faculty colleagues, and friends at a special celebration on April 2, 2005; and WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas, where she earned her bachelor's degree in music education and her master's in applied conducting, Ms. Nelson began her exceptional career at McCallum in 1980 as the assistant band director; she assumed the directorship the following year and today she further serves her school as the fine arts department chair and as the co-director of McCallum's orchestra; and WHEREAS, Under Ms. Nelson's exceptional direction, McCallum students have repeatedly won placement with honor bands, including the UIL All-State Band and the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Band and All-State Jazz Band, have received Best in Class ratings at a host of music festivals, and have earned the privilege of performing at New York City's legendary Carnegie Hall on three separate occasions; moreover, many of her young charges have gone on to enjoy careers in both music and music education, a true testament to her inspiring leadership; and WHEREAS, In addition to her service to McCallum, Ms. Nelson has shared her talents with her community by directing choirs at both Faith Lutheran Church and Gethsemane Lutheran Church and by serving as musical director for two locally produced musicals, garnering a B. Iden Payne nomination for Best Musical Director in 2002; and WHEREAS, A member of Phi Beta Mu, Texas Music Educators Association, Sigma Alpha Iota, and Tau Beta Sigma, she was the recipient of McCallum's Teacher of the Year and 'M' awards, as well as the 2004-2005 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award and the KEYE Silver Apple Award; and WHEREAS, An inspiration to all who are privileged to know her, Carol Nelson has greatly benefited McCallum students with her passion, talent, and leadership, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in honoring her at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Carol Ann Nelson on her many professional accomplishments and commend her for her 25 years of outstanding service to McCallum High School; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Nelson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
