H.R. No. 463


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Ruben M. Garcia has been honored with the Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award by the mayor of Alice, and this distinction provides an ideal opportunity to reflect on this talented Texan's many contributions to the community; and WHEREAS, A graduate of William Adams High School in Alice, Dr. Garcia went on to complete his studies at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in San Antonio, Scott and White Clinic School of Nuclear Medicine Technology in Temple, and the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas, Facultad de Medicina, in Matamoros, Mexico; and WHEREAS, An accomplished x-ray and nuclear medicine technician, he has put his talents to work at several medical institutions, including Lutheran General Hospital in San Antonio, Physicians and Surgeons Hospital in Alice, and Brownsville Medical Center; and WHEREAS, Dr. Garcia is also an astute entrepreneur whose business interests include Lando, Inc., Ruben M. Garcia & Sons Funeral Home, R & R Hardware Farm & Ranch Supply, the Lando Beefmasters Partnership, and ZMART Shoes; and WHEREAS, An avid participant in electoral politics, he has lent his experience, expertise, and support to several political campaigns, and beyond the rough-and-tumble world of politics, he is also an aficionado of the sweet science of boxing and has worked as a professional boxing judge; and WHEREAS, His many institutional affiliations have included the World Boxing Organization and the United States Boxing Association, the Jim Wells County Master Planners Association, the Alice Rotary Club, the United Way, and the Alice Boys and Girls Club; he also serves as chairman of the board of adjustments for the City of Alice; and WHEREAS, The broad range of Dr. Garcia's interests is an apt reflection of his extensive influence on the public life of his hometown, and it is indeed appropriate that he be recognized for his accomplishments at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Dr. Ruben M. Garcia on the occasion of his receiving the MLK Humanitarian Award from the office of the mayor of Alice and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
