R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Leonard C. Smith of George West celebrated his 101st
birthday on February 5, 2005, and this momentous event provides a
fitting opportunity to reflect on the life of this distinguished
Texan; and
WHEREAS, Born on February 5, 1904, in Bee County, Mr. Smith
graduated from Texas A&M University in 1928; after volunteering for
the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, he served as a first
lieutenant in the Army Reserve in Conroe and later as a major in the
U.S. Army during World War II; while living in Conroe, Mr. Smith met
the love of his life, the former Helen Ruth Bullock, and they
married in 1935; and
WHEREAS, Active in the farming and ranching business, Mr.
Smith is a charter member and former president of the South Texas
Hereford Association and longtime member of the Texas Hereford
Association, which he has served in numerous capacities, including
director and executive committee member; he also has served as
president of Three Rivers Farmers Co-op and was a member of the
board of directors from 1955 to 1959; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith is a founder and past director of the Live
Oak County Soil and Water District and the Live Oak County Fair; he
has served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of
George West since 1955 and helped to organize the Live Oak County
Farm Bureau, which he later led as president; and
WHEREAS, This valued member of the community is a life member
of Beeville Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite, and he belongs to
the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in George West; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has played an influential role in the
lives of countless Texans, and it is a pleasure to honor him at this
time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Leonard C. Smith on his 101st
birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
