H.R. No. 470


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Joe LaMantia, Jr., received a most deserving recognition on February 2, 2005, when The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's Regional Academic Health Center Medical Education Division named him Citizen of the Year; and WHEREAS, A longtime champion of educational opportunity, Mr. LaMantia established one of the first scholarships for women athletes at The University of Texas-Pan American, the Ann LaMantia Outstanding Woman Athlete Scholarship, in tribute to his wife of 30 years who passed away in 1983; and WHEREAS, In 1994, with the participation of Anheuser-Busch, he formed a partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and in eight years the partnership raised more than $5 million and awarded more than 2,600 scholarships to South Texas students; and WHEREAS, Mr. LaMantia then founded and served as chairman of the board of directors of the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars (STARS); offering scholarships to students from South Texas to attend the college of their choice, STARS has raised more than $3 million in just two years and has become the premier scholarship foundation in South Texas; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. LaMantia has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Derrelene, as well as their seven children and 26 grandchildren; and WHEREAS, This distinguished Texan has demonstrated how the efforts of one man can positively and indelibly influence the lives of countless individuals, and Mr. LaMantia may take great pride in knowing that generations of South Texans will benefit from his tremendous work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Joe LaMantia, Jr., on his receipt of the Citizen of the Year award from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's Regional Academic Health Center Medical Education Division and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. LaMantia as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
