R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Robert Lee Waller of De Kalb on February 10, 2004, at the age of 72, has brought a great sense of loss to the family and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and WHEREAS, Mr. Waller was born on May 21, 1931, in Coleman Springs, Red River County, and throughout his life he remained proud of his rural Texas upbringing; as a young man, he served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War; and WHEREAS, A widely respected member of his community, Mr. Waller dedicated nearly three and a half decades to the youth of Bowie County--17 years as a teacher, co-op counselor, and ESEA coordinator, and another 17 years as a school superintendent; throughout his career, he brought to his work seasoned judgment, skilled leadership, and the highest professional standards; and WHEREAS, Bob Waller helped to organize the West Bowie County Retired Teachers Association and served as the first president of that organization; he also maintained close ties with a number of former school administrators in the area, a group known fondly and informally as "the Turkeys"; and WHEREAS, Congregants of First United Methodist Church knew Mr. Waller as a man of profound faith who gave unstintingly of his time to church boards and committees and who served for many years as the church treasurer; and WHEREAS, The devoted husband of the former Opal Baird, Mr. Waller took great joy and pride in his family; his affection, if expressed quietly, was nonetheless real and strong, as evidenced by his careful labeling and filing of some 30 years' worth of family photos and his genial, frequent hosting of extended family reunions; and WHEREAS, Gregarious by nature, he delighted in gatherings of all sorts, and his keen sense of humor infused many an occasion with warmth and good cheer; and WHEREAS, Robert Lee Waller lived a full and productive life, and although he will be deeply missed, his memory will long be cherished by those who were privileged to share in his love and friendship; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Lee Waller and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 51 years, Opal Baird Waller; to his daughter, Ellen Coleman and her husband, Paul; to his sons, Scott Waller and his wife, Jill, and Rob Waller and his wife, Karen; to his grandsons, Kyle, Clint, and Frank Coleman and Aaron, Travis, and Robert Waller; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert Lee Waller.
