R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Joseph J. Bettega is retiring as fire chief of Bellaire after 33 years of service to the department, and this memorable milestone offers an ideal opportunity to reflect on this noteworthy Texan's outstanding work in behalf of the community; and WHEREAS, Chief Bettega first joined the Bellaire Fire Department in 1972 as a firefighter, and since that time he has served in a number of capacities, including as public safety officer, inspector, investigator, lieutenant, captain, fire marshal, emergency management coordinator, and most recently chief; and WHEREAS, The many honors he has been accorded throughout his career are testament to his talents, and he was named the City of Bellaire's 1990 Employee of the Year and the Bellaire Fire Department's 1999 Firefighter of the Year; and WHEREAS, He has also lent his time and ability to a number of professional associations and is a member of the Fire Marshals Association of North America, the Texas Fire Chiefs Association, the International Association of Fire Investigators, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs; and WHEREAS, Chief Bettega's tenure leading the department has been characterized by a number of visionary public safety initiatives, and under his watch the department improved its emergency response programs to better anticipate the possibility of terrorism; and WHEREAS, In looking back on his career, this dedicated public servant may indeed take pride in the many significant contributions he has made to the betterment of his community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Chief Joseph J. Bettega on the occasion of his retirement as fire chief of Bellaire and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Chief Bettega as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
