H.R. No. 548


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students and alumni of Prairie View A&M University, a leading nationally recognized historically black university, take justifiable pride in their alma mater, now preparing to celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2006; and WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M University, one of the two oldest public institutions of higher learning in the Lone Star State, was founded in 1876 under the Texas Constitution and the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1860 and 1890 to educate African American students who availed themselves of the opportunity to become productive citizens; the university has been a valued asset to the State of Texas and the nation; and WHEREAS, Over the years, this historically black university has established itself as an outstanding institution of higher learning for those in pursuit of knowledge, regardless of their race, color, creed, religious beliefs, or national origin, having produced an overwhelming number of our state's most vital professionals, including nurses, engineers, educators, and military officers; and WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M's staff and faculty have committed themselves to meeting the educational needs of the community by fostering a harmonious balance between preparation for professional specialization and the liberal arts and sciences curriculum, thereby ensuring that the university will remain an indispensable and welcome presence in the Texas landscape; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of Prairie View A&M University and extend sincere best wishes for continued success and growth as a historically black institution of higher education in the years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the institution as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
