H.R. No. 561


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sheriff Terry Box is marking his 20th anniversary as Collin County's chief law enforcement officer in 2005, and he indeed merits special legislative recognition for his exemplary tenure; and WHEREAS, Born in McKinney, Sheriff Box has served his native county as a peace officer for 37 years, starting with the McKinney Police Department in 1968 and moving to the Plano Police Department in 1971; he joined the Collin County Sheriff's Office in 1981 as a lieutenant, earned a promotion to chief deputy two years later, and was appointed sheriff in 1985; and WHEREAS, Over the course of the next two decades, this highly regarded lawman handily won six successive elections and today, he operates a state-of-the-art, 794-bed direct supervision facility with a 192-bed capacity minimum security section; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Box attended Grayson Junior College and Abilene Christian College and holds a master peace officer certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education; he has completed more than 4,000 hours of law enforcement training and was one of only 40 sheriffs nationwide invited to attend the FBI's National Sheriff's Academy in Quantico, Virginia, in 1985, graduating as vice president of his class; and WHEREAS, Appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards in 1997, he served as chairman of the commission from 2000 to 2003; he has been a member of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas for 24 years, serving as its president in 2001-2002, and his current list of memberships includes the National Sheriffs' Association, the American Jail Association, the Texas Jail Association, the McKinney and Plano chambers of commerce, and the advisory board of the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center; and WHEREAS, Texans are indebted to this exceptional peace officer for his courage, integrity, and selfless dedication to the public welfare, and it is a distinct pleasure to join in honoring him for his exceptional service in behalf of the residents of Collin County; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Terry Box on his 20th anniversary as Sheriff of Collin County, and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and good fortune; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Sheriff Box as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
