R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In the late 1920s, the former Marchman Hotel opened at the intersection of 10th and Lamar in downtown Wichita Falls; eighty years later, a group of local investors has restored the building and preserved a piece of their city's rich architectural history; and WHEREAS, The hotel, built by O. F. Marchman who leased it to the Hilton chain shortly after its completion, played host to many famous guests, including John Wayne, Lyndon Johnson, and Hubert Humphrey; after it closed in 1971, the building housed the Clampitt Retirement Center until 2000; and WHEREAS, Prompted by a love of the building, new owners decided to restore it to its former glory, and now it houses the offices of five state agencies, including the Department of Family and Protective Services, and nearly 200 state employees; the owners decided to maintain the integrity of the building by returning the lobby to its 1920s style and keeping the original reception counter, room-key cabinet, and tile floors; and WHEREAS, The preservation of the Marchman building is a true testament to the hardworking attitude and can-do spirit of the citizens of Wichita Falls; the building is a reminder of the city's past and will continue to serve to educate future generations about the history of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the restoration of the Marchman Hotel and extend to all those associated with this institution best wishes for the future.
