R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an esteemed writer and
political figure with the death of Clyde E. Johnson, Sr., of
Corsicana on February 12, 2005, at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, Best known as the director of the State Democratic
Executive Committee and aide to Congressman J. J. "Jake" Pickle,
this lifelong Democrat, political activist, and journalist played
an integral role in uniting the Texas Democratic Party during the
turbulent 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Born in Lake City, Arkansas, on January 19, 1922,
Mr. Johnson came to Texas to work as a reporter for the Corsicana
Daily Sun, where he wrote a column for many years; he later worked
as a press aide and speechwriter for Texas Agriculture Commissioner
John White and served as campaign manager for Congressman Pickle's
first election to the U.S. House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his longtime association with
Congressman Pickle and his leadership of the Texas Democratic Party
under Governor Price Daniel, Mr. Johnson enjoyed a career as a
Realtor, director of customer service relations for the U.S. Post
Office, and county treasurer for Navarro County; he was also a
member of St. John's Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS, Described by those who knew him as a loyal friend
with a deep appreciation for history and a delightful sense of
humor, Clyde Johnson will undoubtedly be greatly missed by his
loved ones, but he will long be remembered by citizens across Texas
as an engaged and committed writer and activist who dedicated his
career to working for the good of the common man; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Clyde E. Johnson, Sr.,
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
wife, Ann Johnson; to his children and their spouses, Catherine
Johnson, Robert Johnson and his wife, Joan, Amanda Clanton and her
husband, Don, and Clyde E. Johnson, Jr.; to his grandsons, Dillon
and Steven Beevers; and to his other relatives and many friends and
admirers throughout the state; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of Mr. Johnson's family and that when the
House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
Clyde E. Johnson, Sr.
