R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may temper the profound sadness that the passing of Roxie Bess Brockman Bradley of Del Rio on January 21, 2005, brings to all who knew her; and WHEREAS, Born on June 26, 1918, in Estancia, New Mexico, Mrs. Bradley graduated from the Abilene Christian Academy and worked with the handicapped children's program at Garfield Elementary School; she served with distinction at the helm of the Val Verde County Library for more than 35 years, and during that time she was instrumental in the construction of a new library, which opened on July 1, 1965; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Bradley was a well-known and much-loved member of the community; a member of the Central Church of Christ, she served on the first board of trustees of the Pan American Round Table, the first poverty board, and the first Senior Citizen Commission; Mrs. Bradley also was active with the Val Verde Historical Commission, the Council of the Arts, the Mignonette Garden Club, Del Rio Music Club, Del Rio Study Club, the Paul Poag Theatre for the Performing Arts, and the Friends of the Library; and WHEREAS, In addition to receiving the adulation of her fellow citizens, Mrs. Bradley earned the coveted Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award in 1962, one of only 10 such awards conferred in the entire nation; she also was voted the Most Notable Woman of the Year in 1982 by the American Association of University Women; and WHEREAS, A widely respected woman who was a role model for countless area residents, young and old, she leaves a legacy of love and encouragement that will continue to have a positive effect through many generations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Bess Bradley and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her son, Jimmy Frank Bradley and his wife, Nena; to her daughter, Rebecca Ann Bradley and her husband, Hermilo Valdez; to her grandchildren, Brandon Bradley and his wife, Kris, Monica Bradley Stanley and her husband, Matthew, Deborah Ann Bradley, Bradley Don Quinn, Shane Quinn and his wife, Cathy, and Natalie Garcia and her husband, Hector; to her brothers, Byrl Brockman, Clifton Brockman, Joe Brockman and his wife, Mary Dean, Don Brockman and his wife, Bonna, and David Brockman and his wife, Ethel; to her sister, Imogene and her husband, Bill Carter; to her 11 great-grandchildren; and to her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roxie Bess Brockman Bradley.
