R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the International Good Neighbor Council, and this special milestone provides a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to this notable group; and WHEREAS, Founded in 1954, the IGNC is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote goodwill between the United States and Mexico; members of the 24 active chapters participate in activities that increase social, cultural, youth, and educational exchanges, and support the principles of democracy; and WHEREAS, Each year, the council sponsors two conventions, where members from both countries gather to attend committee meetings, tour points of interest, experience regional food and entertainment, and enjoy a formal dance; and WHEREAS, The IGNC addresses important issues such as border crossing procedures, the construction and operation of child and maternal health centers in the Rio Grande Valley, and the teaching of English and Spanish in schools; moreover, the group's foundation strives to help students attend college, aid the disabled, and provide assistance to people in case of natural disaster; and WHEREAS, For half a century, the International Good Neighbor Council has helped to fortify the bond between the United States and Mexico, while meeting the needs of citizens on both sides of the border; the success of this outstanding organization is a tribute to the dedication of its members, who have given selflessly of their time, energy, and resources to ensure its continued existence; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the International Good Neighbor Council on its 50th anniversary and commend its members for their noteworthy efforts; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
