R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter of Houston retired as a professor of veterinary medicine at Prairie View A&M University in August 2004 after 59 years of service; and WHEREAS, Before his retirement, Dr. Poindexter was the oldest practicing African American veterinarian in the country; considered a "vet's vet" by his peers, he was also one of the first African American members of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association; and WHEREAS, In 1992, the Texas commissioner of agriculture named Dr. Poindexter one of four Outstanding Black Agriculturalists in the state; he also received the 50-Year Award for Outstanding Service from Prairie View A&M University and the American Veterinarian Medical Association's Gold Card Membership, and in 1996, he was inducted into the Texas Heritage Hall of Honor; and WHEREAS, During his tenure at the university, this esteemed academic taught classes in anatomy and physiology, diseases and sanitation, animal health, and animal breeding and reproductive physiology; he also provided leadership to the University Veterinary Clinic and professional services to the community at large; and WHEREAS, In recognition of his achievements and his contributions to his students and the school, the Alfred N. Poindexter Scholarship Fund is being established at Prairie View A&M University and a reception and banquet are being held in his honor in Houston on March 19, 2005; and WHEREAS, Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter is truly a living legend in South Texas veterinary medicine; his accomplishments are an inspiration to generations of students who have benefited from his breadth of knowledge and commitment to education; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter on his distinguished career at Prairie View A&M University and extend to him sincere best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Poindexter as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
