R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, James Spriggs of Irving is retiring from his
position as president of the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of
Commerce in October 2004, bringing to a close an exceptional tenure
that has spanned nearly 10 years; and
WHEREAS, The second-longest-serving president in the
chamber's history, Mr. Spriggs took office in April 1995, and under
his leadership the chamber has thrived and today boasts a budget of
more than $1.2 million; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Mountain View College, Mr. Spriggs
also attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and The
University of Texas at Dallas and completed the GTE executive
management development program and the University of Kansas
executive development program; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Spriggs enjoyed a highly successful career with
GTE Corporation, retiring in 1993 as regional vice president and
general manager of the company's south central region after 38
years; he also served as the vice president of field operations for
GTE Southwest; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Spriggs has actively participated
in an array of civic organizations, serving as chair of the Boy
Scouts of America Circle 10 Council, United Cerebral Palsy-Dallas,
and the Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce and serving as president of
the Irving Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Industrial
Development Corporation; moreover, this former Carrollton Citizen
of the Year has ably served the Irving Hospital Foundation, the
Baylor Hospital Foundation-Dallas, the Stuttgart Chamber of
Commerce, United Way-Dallas, YMCA-Dallas, the Irving Schools
Foundation, the University of Dallas, the Dallas Easter Seal
Society for Children, and the Stuttgart Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, James Spriggs is an inspiration to all who are
privileged to know him, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor a man
who has so generously devoted his time and energies to the
betterment of his community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend James Spriggs for his myriad good works
and congratulate him on his remarkable tenure as president of the
Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Spriggs as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
