H.R. No. 647
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Walter Johnson has been posthumously awarded a
Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award by the mayor of Alice,
and his selection for this tribute provides a fitting opportunity
to acknowledge his impressive commitment to his fellow Texans; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1981 and continuing until his passing
in 1994, Mr. Johnson organized various gatherings in the community,
including Christmas parties with a gift-giving Santa, Thanksgiving
food drives, and Easter egg hunts; attendance at these popular
events would be from 800 to 1,000 children, with helpers and
donations recruited from private citizens and local businesses; and
WHEREAS, Drawn to helping anyone in need, but especially
devoted to children, this kind man never wanted any child to feel
left out; he exhibited a genuine love and respect for people and an
unwavering dedication to his community and its children, and it is a
privilege to join in remembering his legacy of giving; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay special tribute to the memory of Walter
Johnson on the occasion of the presentation in his honor of a Martin
Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award from the office of the mayor of
Alice.
