H.R. No. 654
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of
C. M. Kahl of Marfa, who passed from this life on May 30, 2004, at
the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, Born to Herminia and Fred Kahl on September 2, 1921,
in Radcliffe, Iowa, Fritz Kahl enlisted in the Army Air Corps in
1941 and became a flight instructor at the Marfa Air Base, attaining
the rank of first lieutenant; his love for flying led him to such
faraway destinations as Poland, where he was a crew member for the
U.S. National Soaring Team, and he also organized national and
international soaring contests back home in Marfa; and
WHEREAS, Manager of Presidio County's airport for 25 years,
Mr. Kahl enjoyed a varied and successful career that included
experience as a rancher, flight instructor, and weather expert, in
which capacity he reported statistics to the National Weather
Service six times a day for 20 years; moreover, he was responsible
for securing the contract for the Aerostat site in the county; and
WHEREAS, Equally laudable were Mr. Kahl's civic
involvements; Marfa's mayor for three terms and a city
commissioner, he further gave of his time and talents to serve the
community as its representative to the Council of Governments, as a
member of the Board of Visitors at McDonald Observatory, and as a
director of the Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Company; in addition,
he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a former president of
the chamber of commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Bloys Camp
Meeting, as well as the organizer and chairman of the Presidio
County Hospital Board, and co–chair of the Marfa Centennial
Celebration; and
WHEREAS, A man of diverse talents and interests, Mr. Kahl was
featured on an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries" talking about the
Marfa Lights phenomenon, and he also enjoyed acting in local
theater productions and attending reunions with fellow veterans he
served with at the base; and
WHEREAS, Those fortunate to have known Fritz Kahl will
remember his zest for life and his love of family and community, and
although he will be sorely missed, his legacy will live on in the
hearts of the many people whose lives he so richly blessed with his
friendship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of C. M. Kahl and extend
deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Georgie
Lee Jones Kahl; to his daughters, Jan Van Eman and her husband,
Charky, and Gail Cinelli and her husband, Peter; to his
grandchildren, Bill and Murray Van Eman and Erin and Cristina
Cinelli; to his brother, Everett Kahl; and to his other relatives
and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of C. M.
Kahl.
