R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For 100 years, H-E-B has been a leader in the Texas retail industry, providing a vital service to the citizens of the Lone Star State, and the occasion of its centennial offers a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to this Texas institution; and WHEREAS, The story of H-E-B began in 1905 in Kerrville, where the company was founded as a family grocery by Florence Butt; since then, it has been built into one of the world's most successful retailers by her son, Howard E. Butt, and his son, Charles Butt; and WHEREAS, Now beginning its second century, H-E-B continues to be an innovative retailer; it employs more than 56,000 people and is a model for ethics in business and corporate citizenship; and WHEREAS, H-E-B has long practiced the idea that a grocer's role in a community goes well beyond supplying food, and in this spirit the company contributes five percent of its pretax earnings to public and charitable programs; and WHEREAS, H-E-B is a vital partner to the more than 150 Texas communities it serves, contributing significant resources in the areas of hunger relief and prevention, education, diversity, health and wellness, the environment, and the arts; indeed, the company's commitment to food banks is unparalleled, and its ongoing efforts to battle hunger and support hunger relief programs contribute significantly to the well-being of countless Texans; and WHEREAS, Adopting environmental conservation and efficiency is part of every aspect of H-E-B's business, from its trucking fleets to its corporate headquarters at the historic Arsenal in San Antonio; in recognition of these efforts, H-E-B became the first retail company honored with the Texas Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence in 1997; and WHEREAS, A retailer that promotes Texas produce and products, H-E-B is an important part of the Texas economy, and its century of service is a proud achievement worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby designate March 10, 2005, as H-E-B Celebration 100 Day in Texas and extend best wishes to the many individuals who have contributed to the longstanding success of this fine company; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for H-E-B as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
