H.R. No. 664
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Truly at the vanguard in the field of Texas
journalism, Barbara Funkhouser of Las Cruces, New Mexico, became
the first woman to be named an editor of the El Paso Times when she
assumed that position in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Funkhouser had a distinguished 30-year career
with the publication, starting in 1960 and ending with her
retirement as editorial page editor in 1990; and
WHEREAS, A native of El Paso, this notable writer earned her
bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University; she has
received state and national recognition for her work, and published
a book entitled The Caregivers: El Paso's Medical History,
1898-1998; now living on her family farm in Las Cruces, she is a
regular contributor to the Las Cruces Sun-News editorial page; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Funkhouser has earned widespread respect
and admiration, and she can take justifiable pride in her myriad
achievements and illustrious career; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Barbara Funkhouser on her accomplishments
as the first woman to be an editor at the El Paso Times and extend to
her best wishes for continued success in all of her endeavors; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Funkhouser as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
