R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Margaret McDermott, an eminent longtime supporter of the Dallas Museum of Art, and a group of other Dallas philanthropists have made the largest combined gift ever presented to the DMA; and WHEREAS, Announced in February 2005, the gift is valued at approximately $400 million and coincides with the completion of the first phase of the museum's $185 million centennial capital campaign; and WHEREAS, Mrs. McDermott, whose benefactions to the DMA over a span of more than five decades have made her the museum's most generous donor, has now promised to that institution an acclaimed painting titled Water Lilies--TheClouds, by Claude Monet; completed in 1903 and noted for its "sheer beauty and brilliant coloring," the work is considered to be the most important Impressionist painting in private hands in Texas; it presently forms part of one of the greatest Impressionist and Postimpressionist collections in the region; and WHEREAS, The wife of the late Eugene McDermott, a founder of Texas Instruments, Mrs. McDermott played a major role in the relocation of the DMA from Fair Park to the new downtown Dallas Arts District in 1984 and in the construction of the subsequent Hamon Wing extension; her new gift is being made in honor of Nancy Hamon, another distinguished supporter of the DMA; and WHEREAS, The Dallas Museum of Art, established in 1903, boasts an encyclopedic collection of more than 23,000 works spanning 5,000 years of history and representing all media; the extraordinary generosity of Mrs. McDermott and her fellow donors exemplifies a remarkable degree of civic pride and advances dramatically the mission of that outstanding institution; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Margaret McDermott for her exceptional philanthropy in behalf of the Dallas Museum of Art and extend to her profound appreciation for cultural leadership that will forever enrich the citizens of this state; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. McDermott as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
