R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends deeply mourn the passing of Markus Abraham Rosenberg on February 18, 2005, and seek to still the pain of loss by remembering his strength, courage, and love; and WHEREAS, An Auschwitz survivor and successful Dallas businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Rosenberg was born in Bardejova, a town in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in modern-day Slovakia; after World War II, he moved to Dallas with his brother, and within six months, they founded ARO Food and Spice Products, which eventually became Arrow Industries, Inc.; the business grew steadily to incorporate a significant line of grocery supplies, including private-label products for Kroger and Safeway, and in 1992, it was sold to ConAgra, Inc.; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rosenberg's philanthropic efforts were truly outstanding and included the 1962 founding of the first Jewish day school in Dallas, Akiba Academy; he was also a founder and supporter of Yavneh Academy of Dallas, the Center for Jewish History, and Congregation Shaare Tefilla and was one of about 40 founding sponsors of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, Markus Rosenberg was a much-treasured citizen of Dallas, a respected professional who worked tirelessly in behalf of his community; he will be deeply missed by those who were privileged to know him and by those who were touched by his deep commitment to service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Markus Abraham Rosenberg and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Ann Pappenheim Rosenberg; to his son, Steven Rosenberg; to his daughters, Helen Rosenberg Waks, Lizzy Greif, and Sheri Rosenberg; to his sister, Erika Sigel; to his brothers, David Rosenberg and Emanuel "Manny" Rohan; to his 12 grandchildren; and to the many friends of this extraordinary gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Markus Abraham Rosenberg.
