R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On April 15, 2005, the members and friends of
Northside Antioch Baptist Church in Houston are holding the 35
Years of Pastoral Service Retirement Gala in honor of the Reverend
Robert Staggers, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Staggers has been a member of Northside
Antioch Baptist since childhood, when he moved with his family from
Rayville, Louisiana, to a house behind the original church site in
Houston's historic Fifth Ward; and
WHEREAS, An exceptional student, he graduated from Phillis
Wheatley High School and soon embarked on a nine-year tour of duty
with the U.S. Air Force, during which time he successfully
completed a religious education course, among other classes and
programs, at the U.S. Air Force Air University; he received a
bachelor's degree with honors from Southern Bible College, enrolled
at Houston Baptist University to work toward an undergraduate
degree in psychology and Christianity, and graduated at the top of
his class from the Houston Training Institute, where he majored in
computer science; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of his ministry at Northside,
Reverend Staggers has implemented myriad outreach efforts,
including a food pantry, health care ministries, youth programs,
computer training, and a GED ministry and has overseen projects to
build a new sanctuary and remodel the old structure; notably active
in the wider community as well, he founded the Northside Urban
Community Development Corporation and has organized several
groups, including LIFT (Life Investment for Training); and
WHEREAS, Reverend Staggers gains important support from his
wife, Dale Morris, whom he married in 2001, and their extended
family, including four children, six grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Constantly striving for personal development as
well as spiritual growth, this remarkable gentleman is fluent in
Japanese, adheres to a daily walking regimen, and has won acclaim
for his homemade biscuits; his plans for retirement include a
full-time mission ministry in Brazil and building a family center;
and
WHEREAS, Reverend Staggers is truly a blessing in the lives
of countless people who have been uplifted by his heartfelt prayers
and his concern for their welfare, and it is a distinct pleasure to
honor this man of faith at this special time in his life; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Reverend Robert Staggers, Jr., on
his exemplary 35-year pastoral tenure with Northside Antioch
Baptist Church in Houston and extend to him sincere best wishes for
a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Reverend Staggers as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
