H.R. No. 683


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of the city of Gainesville are visiting the State Capitol on March 10, 2005, to celebrate the contributions of their fair city; and WHEREAS, Located in the geographic center of Cooke County in North Texas, Gainesville was established in 1850 and named in honor of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a U.S. general who was sympathetic with the Texas Revolution; the city was officially incorporated on February 17, 1873, and with the arrival of a railway system became an established commercial and shipping point for area ranchers and farmers; and WHEREAS, The equine and cattle industries have provided the city with a stable economy over the years, and today, additional business and educational opportunities abound with Weber Aircraft, the newly constructed North Texas Medical Center, and North Texas College, all located in the community; moreover, a recent runway extension has helped the Gainesville Municipal Airport become one of the best general aviation airports in the state; and WHEREAS, Gainesville is known for offering a high quality of life in a small-town setting; designated a Sustaining Level Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission, the city boasts one of the largest preserved commercial districts among small Texas towns; it is also the community that initiated the Medal of Honor Host City program, which was designed to honor living recipients of the nation's highest decoration for military valor; and WHEREAS, The county seat of Cooke County, Gainesville hosts such popular events as Depot Days and the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Rodeo; the city is home to the F. E. Schmitz Museum and the Frank Buck Zoo, which has just completed a $2.4 million refurbishment and exhibit expansion in Leonard Park; the park is also the site of the F. E. Schmitz Express train, the historic Leonard Pavilion, the All Children's Playground, and various sports facilities; and WHEREAS, The residents of Gainesville are indeed justified in promoting the myriad attractions of their thriving city, and it is a pleasure to honor them on this special day; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize March 10, 2005, as Gainesville Day at the State Capitol and extend to those citizens present today a warm welcome to Austin.
