R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Jarvis Christian College of Hawkins is celebrating Founders'/Homecoming Week on March 16-20, 2005, and it is a fitting time to reflect on the excellent educational opportunities provided by the school; and WHEREAS, Acredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, this traditional liberal arts institution is located on 1,000 wooded acres halfway between Dallas and Shreveport; the college was founded in 1904 under the leadership of Mrs. Mary Alphin, a state organizer for the Negro Disciples of Christ in Texas; eventually, Major and Mrs. J. J. Jarvis donated a generous plot of land to the school, and the first classes were held in 1913; and WHEREAS, Today, the college's average enrollment approaches 550 students, and the school was named one of the best regional liberal arts colleges in the Southwest by U.S. News & World Report; the school provides a high-quality education in the arts, humanities, and sciences, in a personalized environment with excellent academic and computer facilities; a fixture in the community, the college injects more than $10 million into neighboring counties and hosts many notable annual events and programs; and WHEREAS, The faculty, staff, and administrators of Jarvis Christian College have helped countless students prepare for professional lives by providing a superior education in a supportive setting; the college is an invaluable asset to higher education in Texas, and it is a pleasure to celebrate its contributions on this special occasion; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Jarvis Christian College on the occasion of its celebration of Founders'/Homecoming Week on March 16-20, 2005, and extend to all those associated with the school sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
