R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Gary Hardee, publisher of the Star-Telegram in
Arlington, has been chosen to receive the Richard Greene Community
Service Award from Young Men for Arlington; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as publisher, Mr. Hardee writes
editorials and a column, supervises the editorial board, and
oversees community relations and marketing operations; during his
long association with the paper, he has worked tirelessly to ensure
that it serves the good of the Arlington community, providing
comprehensive coverage of city news while consistently shining a
spotlight on matters of particular significance to area residents;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hardee's commitment to his fellow citizens has
been further demonstrated through his extensive efforts in behalf
of civic organizations and worthy causes; a former advisor to the
Arlington African-American Chamber of Commerce, he presently
serves on the advisory board of the Tarrant County Asian-American
chamber and on the board of directors for both the Arlington chamber
and the Arlington Hispanic chamber; and
WHEREAS, Other beneficiaries of Mr. Hardee's vision and
leadership have been the Arlington Child Care Council, Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, the Arlington Life Shelter, Dental Health for
Arlington, the Arlington Independent School District Education
Foundation, the River Legacy Foundation, and the local chapter of
the Society of Professional Journalists; and
WHEREAS, Time and again, this distinguished gentleman has
been asked to take charge of a critical undertaking: he has
directed an Arlington Museum of Art capital campaign to finance
$1.2 million in renovations; chaired the Dream Makers event for The
University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing, an effort that
has raised more than $350,000 for student scholarships; chaired the
Boy Scouts of America Longhorn Council fund-raising luncheon,
bringing in more than $60,000; and assisted Helping Restore Ability
in securing nearly $80,000 in pledges; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous well-deserved accolades,
Mr. Hardee has been honored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington,
Boy Scouts of America Longhorn Council, Junior League of Arlington,
Tarrant County Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, Arlington Life
Shelter, and Country Day School of Arlington; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hardee was appointed publisher of the Arlington
Star-Telegram in June 2001, after serving for a year as associate
publisher and four years as editor; a graduate of the University of
Missouri School of Journalism, he has worked in the Fort Worth
office of the Star-Telegram and at papers in San Antonio, Dallas,
and Jackson, Tennessee, as well as on the staffs of the American
Airlines in-flight magazine and the corporate communications
department of J. C. Penney Co., Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Through his myriad contributions as a newspaper
executive and public-spirited citizen, Gary Hardee has touched the
lives of countless members of the Arlington community and won the
profound respect of those who have been privileged to know and work
with him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Gary Hardee on his receipt of the
2004 Richard Greene Community Service Award from Young Men for
Arlington and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
success in all his endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Hardee as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
