R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Grace DeForde, an eighth-grade student at
Friendswood Junior High School, has been selected to receive a 2005
Prudential Spirit of Community Award in recognition of her
exemplary volunteer efforts; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership
with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, these
awards honor a middle school and high school youth from each state
for outstanding acts of volunteerism; this year, more than 20,000
students nationwide were considered for these awards, and honorees
received $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to
Washington, D.C., where 10 are to be named America's top youth
volunteers for 2005; and
WHEREAS, Ms. DeForde, who was diagnosed with a bleeding
problem at the age of seven, has sought to raise public awareness
about health issues; she developed an idea to give out backpacks and
hip packs with pharmaceutical samples and pillows with an
embroidered logo on them; and
WHEREAS, The future of the State of Texas, the strength of our
communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend,
in great measure, on the dedication of young people who, like Ms.
DeForde, use their considerable talents and resources to serve
others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Grace DeForde for receiving a
Prudential Spirit of Community Award and extend to her sincere best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. DeForde as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
