R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Publishers Association are
gathering for the organization's 19th annual convention March
17-19, 2005, in San Antonio, and this special occasion is a fitting
time to reflect on the contributions of this vital group of African
American newspapers and publishers; and
WHEREAS, TPA was established in 1985, when a group of
visionary publishers, many of whom were members of the National
Newspaper Publishers Association, decided to work together on a
regional level to promote print media and serve as a resource for
helpful and reliable news and information; and
WHEREAS, Representing 26 African American newspapers, the
association continues to meet the changing needs of the African
American community today by focusing on social, political, and
economic empowerment; its mission is to act as the governing body
for the African American print media industry, providing member
newspapers technical support and opportunities for increased
advertising, and ultimately keeping Texas readers informed about
events and issues significant to their lives and to the African
American community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, TPA is a tireless advocate for its members and their
readers; during the observance of Texas Publishers Association
Black Press Week, the organization may particularly take pride in
the role it continues to play in representing African American
publications and their readers in the Lone Star State for nearly two
decades; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the members of the Texas Publishers
Association on the occasion of the organization's 19th annual
convention; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
