R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Alex Lee Garza of Rio Grande City has distinguished
himself as a talented athlete through his winning of gold and silver
medals at the 2004 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics held in
Des Moines, Iowa; and
WHEREAS, A fifth-grader at La Union Elementary School, Alex
has earned a medal in each of the three previous Junior Olympics
competitions; preparing well for the first year in which he was
qualified to participate in two events, he undertook an intensive
training regimen and set a new bar for personal accomplishment in
2004, taking the gold medal in the discus throw with a throw of 102
feet, 6 inches, and breaking the national record and earning the
silver medal in the shot put with his throw of 44 feet, 5-3/4
inches; and
WHEREAS, His outstanding performance in these events is
attributable not only to his own determination and discipline but
also to the solid support he received from his friends and family,
including his parents, Alex and Mariselda Garza; his sister, Amanda
Lee; his uncle and coach, Ronald Pratt; and his grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Julian Garza and Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Salinas; and
WHEREAS, A great favorite in his hometown, Alex has benefited
from the good wishes and practical aid of his community, and their
loyalty has now been richly rewarded with athletic accolades in
which all who know him may take pride; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Alex Lee Garza on winning gold and
silver medals in the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics and
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Alex Lee Garza as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
