H.R. No. 747
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A century of joyful times, loving moments, and
meaningful accomplishments is truly a reason to celebrate, and in
2005, Hester Smith Lockett of Brenham is marking the centennial of
her birth; and
WHEREAS, One of four children, this lovely lady recalls an
early 20th century Brenham with unpaved streets on which she walked
to school with friends and to church with her family; and
WHEREAS, In her senior year of high school in 1923, Mrs.
Lockett was crowned Queen of the Brenham Maifest, one of the oldest
spring festivals in the South, this one with a German flavor
saluting the local heritage; she carried on a proud family
tradition, for her mother was named Maifest Queen in 1894; and
WHEREAS, Queen Hester went on to attend The University of
Texas and then married her royal partner, King Reese Lockett; the
couple were blessed with two children, Hester Lockett Kirkum and
Reese Lockett, Jr., who were also named royalty during the highly
anticipated annual celebration; and
WHEREAS, After her children were grown, Mrs. Lockett shared
her time and talents with her community by volunteering with her
church, the public library, and the Brenham State School; she was a
support for her husband, who served his fellow citizens as mayor of
Brenham for 28 years and owned a men's clothing store; later, Mrs.
Lockett took on the responsibilities of dorm mother at Blinn
College and assisted numerous families with their Maifest plans;
and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Lockett was selected as a Washington County
Woman of the Year for her many contributions to her hometown, and in
a singular tribute, her likeness for a time graced cartons of Blue
Bell ice cream; and
WHEREAS, Hester Lockett has richly blessed her family and
community through her love, her commitment, and her actions, and it
is a distinct pleasure to join in honoring her on this momentous
milestone in her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby warmly congratulate Hester Smith Lockett of
Brenham on her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes
for continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Lockett as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
