R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Floyd Verheyden received the 2004 Jacksonville Outstanding Citizen Award for his contributions to the medical and civic communities of this fine city; and WHEREAS, Born in Waxahachie on September 7, 1915, Dr. Verheyden graduated from Waxahachie High School and earned a degree in pharmacy from The University of Texas at Austin; he was a member of the first class at Southwestern Medical School, and he also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Regensburg, Germany; he settled in Jacksonville in 1951, where he joined the Travis Clinic Association and practiced internal medicine for 35 years; and WHEREAS, During his noteworthy professional career, this esteemed physician also distinguished himself as a committed member of his community; he served as president of the 11th Medical District of Texas and Cherokee Medical Society and as chair of the medical and religion committee of the Texas Medical Association; he was also one of the cofounders of Travis Towers Apartments, and the community room was recently named in his honor; and WHEREAS, Dr. Verheyden has lent his helping hand and generous heart to numerous causes and organizations, including First Methodist Church, the Jacksonville Independent School Board, the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, the Lions Club, and the local Red Cross chapter; he also served on the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce board of directors; no stranger to awards, he has received the John Justin Standard of the West Award and was named the Grand Marshal of the Rodeo Parade for his service to the Jacksonville Rodeo Association; and WHEREAS, Supported by his loving family, Floyd Verheyden has tirelessly worked in behalf of the city of Jacksonville to provide its citizens with a quality of life they so richly deserve, and it is a pleasure to honor his achievements at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Floyd Verheyden on his receipt of the 2004 Jacksonville Outstanding Citizen Award and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Verheyden as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
