No. 760R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Memories of a life well lived may comfort the family and friends of Crawford Godfrey of Jacksonville, who died on February 24, 2005, at the age of 92; and WHEREAS, Born in Kerrville on January 21, 1913, Mr. Godfrey spent his early years in Crandall and graduated from Kaufman High School; after attending Schreiner College, he went on to earn a degree from The University of Texas; and WHEREAS, He married the love of his life, Helen Gray, in 1936, and the couple enjoyed an enduring union until her passing in 1997; and WHEREAS, Successful in a number of professional ventures, Mr. Godfrey was an accountant and later a partner with the Childs Food company, which merged with Kroger in 1957; he moved to Shreveport to work with Kroger and also bought two radio stations and co-owned an automobile business; he became president of Nichols Industries and served as a director of Kusan when it merged with Nichols; he participated in the merger of Kusan with Bethlehem Steel, and in 1969 he purchased S-K Church Furniture Company; and WHEREAS, A respected community leader, Mr. Godfrey was president of the United Fund, Jacksonville Public Library, and local Kiwanis club, as well as a lieutenant governor with the Kiwanis organization; he was on the boards of directors of the chamber of commerce and the Jacksonville Industrial Foundation, and he served as mayor and on the city council; an active congregant of the First Presbyterian Church for nearly 70 years, he was selected an advisory director of Austin Bank and was on the Nan Travis Hospital board for 30 years; and WHEREAS, Crawford Godfrey touched the lives of countless individuals during his lifetime, and he will long be remembered for his impressive achievements and his unwavering commitment to his community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Crawford Godfrey and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Gray Godfrey, Gary Crawford and Lois Ann Godfrey, and James David and Jean Godfrey; to his grandchildren and their spouses, David Gray and Rebecca Godfrey, Jennifer Lynelle and Geoffrey Bennett, Stephen Crawford and Laurie Godfrey, and Kevin Gray and Sara Godfrey; to his great-grandchildren, Ruth Lynelle Bennett and Madison Lea, Gavin Brant, Mandalyn Grahm, Kade Crawford, and Gray Joshua Godfrey; to his sister, Merle Bounds; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Crawford Godfrey.
