R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Rita Kathryn Roney of McAllen has contributed
greatly to her community as an organizer and fund-raiser for the
Boys & Girls Club of McAllen; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in McAllen, Mrs. Roney engaged in
her first fund-raising efforts as a fifth-grader at Wilson
Elementary School when she organized a backyard carnival to benefit
the March of Dimes; a graduate of McAllen High School and Rollins
College in Winter Park, Florida, she has served on the boards of
several organizations and together with her husband, Glen, has
participated in numerous causes benefiting children; and
WHEREAS, While serving as acting chair of the Girls Club
addition to the Boys Club of McAllen, Mrs. Roney raised nearly
$500,000 in one week to build a multimillion-dollar complex to
benefit thousands of young people in the city of McAllen; in October
2004, the Glen E. and Rita K. Roney Center opened in northwest
McAllen, providing the city with its second site for the Boys &
Girls Club, a 35,000-square-foot facility with modern amenities;
and
WHEREAS, With her generous heart and can-do attitude, Rita
Roney is truly an inspiration to her fellow citizens and all who
know of her impressive accomplishments; her work in behalf of the
city's young people deserves significant recognition, and it is a
pleasure to honor her at this time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Rita Kathryn Roney for her contributions
to the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen and extend to her sincere best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Roney as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
