R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Myra Brown Robinson of Big Spring is being inducted
into the Petroleum Hall of Fame on April 14, 2005, at the Petroleum
Museum in Midland; and
WHEREAS, The Petroleum Hall of Fame recognizes individuals
who have made significant contributions to the development of the
petroleum industry and impacted their communities through civic and
social involvement; and
WHEREAS, Myra Brown Robinson was born in Fort Worth in 1919 to
Flora and John Brown and lived on the Triangle Ranch in Mitchell
County until she reached school age and moved to Colorado City; she
graduated from Colorado High School in 1937 and attended the
University of California at Los Angeles before returning home to
work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture; in 1942, she married
G. R. "Bob" Robinson, who founded the Robinson Drilling Company in
1947 with his father, Glenn Robinson, and Mrs. Robinson as
bookkeeper and payroll clerk; the family business developed leases
in Scurry, Mitchell, and Garza Counties and moved its headquarters
to Big Spring in 1966; and
WHEREAS, After her husband's untimely death in 1972, Mrs.
Robinson quickly learned all aspects of the business and took over
the company operations; she became one of the few women in the
country to lead a drilling company, and for more than 30 years, she
has kept up with changing technology, upgrading from nitroglycerin
shoots to 3-D seismic operations; now known as Robinson Drilling of
Texas, the company has drilled more than 1,500 wells totaling over
13 million feet under her direction; and
WHEREAS, Today, Mrs. Robinson is known for her energetic
leadership, strong character, fiscal responsibility, and
unwavering loyalty to her employees; she was the first woman
selected by the Permian Basin Petroleum Association for its Top
Hand Award, representing a lifetime of personal and professional
achievement; her commitment to her community has been amply
demonstrated by her service as an elder of Big Spring's First
Presbyterian Church, as a board member of the Salvation Army,
Schreiner College, Presbyterian Church Foundation, and Texas
Presbyterian Foundation, and as a member of the Petroleum Museum,
Samaritan Counseling Center, and Howard College Foundation; she has
also been named Big Spring's Woman of the Year and received the
Samaritan Counseling Center's Ethics in Business Award; and
WHEREAS, The beloved mother of our esteemed colleague,
Representative Myra Crownover, Myra Brown Robinson holds the
distinction of being only the second woman ever elected to the
Petroleum Hall of Fame; her achievements as an industry and
community leader have distinguished her among the members of her
profession, and she is indeed deserving of this prestigious award;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Myra Brown Robinson on her
induction into the Petroleum Hall of Fame and commend her for her
outstanding professional accomplishments and civic contributions;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Robinson as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
