R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Clayton W. Williams, Jr., of Midland is being inducted into the Petroleum Hall of Fame on April 14, 2005, at the Petroleum Museum in Midland; and WHEREAS, The Petroleum Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of the petroleum industry and impacted their communities through civic and social involvement; and WHEREAS, Born in Alpine in 1931, Clayton Wheat Williams, Jr., graduated from Fort Stockton High School and earned his bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from Texas A&M University; he served in the U.S. Army before returning to Texas to work in life insurance; in 1957, he cofounded his first company, May and Williams, an oil and gas business that quickly found success with a productive well; and WHEREAS, Over the next 38 years, Mr. Williams founded eight oil and gas companies, including Clajon, which was established in 1961 and eventually became the largest individually owned gas company in Texas; during the 1960s and 1970s, he became one of the top natural gas wildcatters in the state, making his biggest strike with the Gataga No. 2 in Loving County on New Year's Eve in 1975; today, Mr. Williams serves as chair and president of Clayton Williams Energy, Inc., one of 26 companies he has founded in his lifetime; and WHEREAS, Responsible for the development of ClayDesta Plaza in Midland, he has a proven track record of leadership through his many achievements, including the establishment of the 200 Club to recognize the efforts of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies and the nonprofit Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute; the Republican nominee for governor in 1990, he has been inducted into the All-American Wildcatters Association and has received the Lifetime Achievement Energy Award, the Golden Plate Award, the Jaycees Senatorial Award, and the Hearst Corporation Energy Award; and WHEREAS, The achievements of Clayton Williams as an industry and community leader have distinguished him among the members of his profession, and he is indeed deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Clayton W. Williams, Jr., on his induction into the Petroleum Hall of Fame and commend him for his outstanding professional accomplishments and civic contributions; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Williams as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
