R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A century of living a productive and satisfying life
is truly reason for celebration, and on April 7, 2005, Faye C. Smith
of Austin is observing this significant milestone in the company of
her loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1905 in Grand Saline, to Albert and Helen
Crone, she grew up on her family's farm, helping her parents with
the daily chores at home, playing basketball at school, and singing
in school and church choirs; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith moved to Dallas with her family following
graduation, and with her sister found employment as a singer and
piano player at the local silent movie theater; billed as the Crone
Sisters, the young women were soon managing a busy schedule of
performances throughout the state with well-known gospel artists,
including the Stamps Quartet; and
WHEREAS, In 1926, this charming lady married the love of her
life, World War I veteran Ivan Smith, and the couple moved to
Austin, where they raised six children and enjoyed 53 years of
marriage until Mr. Smith's passing in 1979; the adored matriarch of
an extended family, Mrs. Smith takes great pride in her children,
who have demonstrated admirable patriotic and civic spirit, and she
has been further blessed with 18 grandchildren, 33
great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, When her three sons and three daughters were
school-aged, this devoted mother volunteered as a troop leader with
the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, and served in various
offices with the PTA, including president of both the Rosedale
Elementary School and Baker Junior High School organizations; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she formed the
Rosedale Trio with two friends and took to the stage at church,
school, and civic functions and during summer shows at the Zilker
Hillside Theater; and
WHEREAS, Multigifted as an artist, Mrs. Smith has generously
shared the fruits of her skill as a painter with family and friends,
crocheted blankets for each of her newborn grandchildren, and
hand-beaded treasured items for her children; further, her
formidable talents in the culinary arts have generated eager
volunteers to sample her homemade treats; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of 10 decades, this charming woman
has experienced many singular events, including traveling across
Texas with her parents in a covered wagon, and she has truly
enhanced the lives of countless people with her devotion to others
and her enthusiasm for living; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby warmly congratulate Faye C. Smith on the joyous
occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her heartfelt best
wishes for continued happiness and good fortune; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
