R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times, loving moments, and meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of photojournalist and commercial photographer Maurice Miller of Austin, who passed away on December 13, 2004, at the age of 84; and WHEREAS, Born in San Francisco on July 1, 1920, Mr. Miller served with the U.S. Army 84th Infantry during World War II, documenting the Allied advance, including the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Jews from Nazi concentration camps; his duties also included flying reconnaissance photography missions over enemy lines to provide intelligence and to document the progress of the Allies; and WHEREAS, When the war ended, Mr. Miller came to Houston, where he was employed with the Houston Post for eight years, including five years as chief photographer; known for his photographic exploration of humanity, Mr. Miller worked as a stringer for Time and Life magazines and the Black Star photo agency and was a contributor to numerous other publications, including the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Business Week, Architectural Forum, Arts and Architecture, and Parade Magazine; and WHEREAS, Mr. Miller was a widower who cared for his two children while studying at the University of Houston and working full-time; in the 1960s, he was a staff photographer in the architecture department of Rice University as well as for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Houston Contemporary Arts Museum, and the University of St. Thomas; he later opened his own freelance commercial business; and WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous accolades for his photography, Mr. Miller won awards for spot news and feature photos from the Associated Press and earned honors from People Magazine, the Groller Society, and the National Press Photographer's Association; and WHEREAS, This devoted father, talented photographer, and cherished friend led a life rich in significance and achievement, and his spirit will continue to live in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Maurice Miller and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughter, Marsha Miller; to his son, Mark Miller; to his grandson, Matt Miller; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maurice Miller.
