R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Judge Edward Marquez of El Paso is receiving the Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Award on April 28, 2005; and WHEREAS, Distributed by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Project Amistad, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the elderly and disabled communities of El Paso, the award honors those citizens who have displayed an extraordinary dedication to the city and its residents; and WHEREAS, Honored for his lifetime service and commitment to LULAC and his mentorship of youth in El Paso, Judge Marquez is currently serving as judge of the 34th District Court, after distinguishing himself as state district judge of the 65th District Court and as assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas; he received his undergraduate and law degrees from The University of Texas at Austin and served in the U.S. Air Force, Air Rescue Service during the Korean War; and WHEREAS, Judge Marquez is a fervent supporter of community programs designed to mentor and guide young people of El Paso; he has established a junior toastmaster's club at the El Paso Boy's Club to promote public speaking, and he also organized an Olympic wrestling program to develop students' athletic abilities; and WHEREAS, As an active member of LULAC, Judge Marquez has served in numerous elected positions, lending his legal expertise to the organization; he has also supported the league's youth programs by raising scholarship funds to enhance educational opportunities for students; and WHEREAS, No stranger to accolades, Judge Marquez has been recognized by countless organizations, including the YMCA, the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, the Foster Parent Association, Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, The strength of our communities and the promise of future generations depend on the dedication of individuals like Judge Marquez; he uses his professional resources and generous spirit to help others, a truly noble cause that serves as an inspiration to us all; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Judge Edward Marquez on his receipt of the Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Award and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Judge Marquez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
