R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Mary Alice Skaggs of Celina is celebrating her 97th
birthday on April 22, 2005, and it is a fitting opportunity to
reflect on her distinguished tenure as an educator; and
WHEREAS, A native of Celina, Mrs. Skaggs was raised in Dallas
and attended Gunter Bible College before earning her bachelor's and
master's degrees from Austin College in Sherman; she completed
additional graduate work at Texas Woman's University and Southern
Methodist University and began her teaching career in Gunter, where
she taught English and Latin; and
WHEREAS, For 31 years, this esteemed educator worked for the
Plano Independent School District, where she taught English,
journalism, and economics; the first teacher in Plano ISD to hold a
master's degree, she was also the senior class sponsor, a position
she held for more than three decades; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Skaggs sponsored a Plano chapter of the
National Council of Teachers of English and conducted a senior
English workshop for NCTE in Honolulu; she has maintained active
memberships with the Plano Retired Teachers Association, Delta
Kappa Gamma, Kappa Gamma Chi at Austin College, the Thursday Study
Club, and Pitman Creek Church of Christ; and
WHEREAS, Often honored for her accomplishments, Mrs. Skaggs
was the recipient of the 1958 Teacher of the Year Award from the
Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, a Career Achievement Award from
the Plano Business and Professional Women's Club, and awards of
merit from the Plano Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Joint English
Committee; in 1996, she received a great tribute when Skaggs
Elementary School opened in Plano; and
WHEREAS, Mary Alice Skaggs is truly an inspiration to all
those who are privileged to know her and those who have been touched
by her commitment to education, and it is a pleasure to honor her on
this special day; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Alice Skaggs on her 97th
birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Skaggs as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
