R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, February 23, 2005, marked the 100th anniversary of
Rotary International, and this momentous milestone provides a
fitting opportunity to recognize that outstanding organization as
well as one of its exemplary chapters, the Del Rio Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International was founded in 1905 by Chicago
attorney Paul Harris in an effort to provide professionals with
opportunities for service projects and fellowship; since that
important date, the organization has thrived and today boasts more
than 30,000 clubs throughout the world, each greatly contributing
to the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, In observance of its parent organization's
anniversary, the Del Rio Rotary Club initiated a host of centennial
projects of benefit to the community, including Rotary Park,
complete with picnic areas, a pavilion and soccer field, and a
playground, as well as the donation and planting of trees in Moore
Park and at Lake Amistad; moreover, the group's members were
honored with a proclamation from Del Rio Mayor Dora G. Alcala; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception in November 1922, the Del Rio
Rotary Club has made a positive difference in the lives of countless
area citizens; best known for its scholarships, which endow 12 to 15
deserving college students with approximately $10,000 annually,
the Del Rio organization sponsors the youth clubs Rotaract and
Interact, orchestrates youth study exchanges with Rotary clubs
abroad, coordinates blood and organ donation drives, and hosts
literacy and drug abuse awareness programs; in addition, the club's
annual vocational awards recognize outstanding achievements in the
business and service industries, and with federal assistance, the
chapter built and manages a 53-unit apartment complex for
income-disadvantaged residents; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, Rotarians worldwide have helped
promote health, literacy, peace, and understanding, and it is
indeed a pleasure to join the Del Rio Rotary Club in celebrating a
century of "Service Above Self"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Rotary International on the
occasion of its 100th anniversary and recognize the Del Rio Rotary
Club for its many good works; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Del Rio club as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
