WHEREAS, The La Joya High School Coyotes football team
enjoyed an outstanding 2004 campaign, advancing to the state
quarterfinals for the first time in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, The Coyotes completed the 2004 season with an
impressive 10-3 record and captured the district, bi-district, and
regional championships; throughout the season, the team's legion of
enthusiastic fans showed their support by filling Coyote Stadium,
the 15,000-seat, state-of-the-art venue that is home to the pride
of La Joya; and
WHEREAS, Head coach Oscar "Okie" Villasenor provided
leadership and guidance for his players during the long season,
instilling in them the values of teamwork and sportsmanship; his
contributions, however, were not strictly limited to outlining
strategies and providing encouragement, especially after the
correlation between his presence at the Thursday night team dinner
was linked to two early-season losses by the Coyotes; and
WHEREAS, Coach Villasenor's proactive approach to this
curious phenomenon was to dine separately from the team on
Thursdays and to implement his own superstitious gastronomic
ritual: each Friday at lunchtime, he consumed half a barbecue
chicken, a double order of beans, two corn tortillas, and a Big Red
at Leo's Drive In, and this culinary combination proved to be a
winning recipe for the Coyotes; and
WHEREAS, By recognizing these odd, yet intriguing,
connections--and, more importantly, by demonstrating steadfast
determination and commitment at practice and on the playing
field--the team was able to rattle off an eight-game winning streak
that propelled the Coyotes into the state tournament, and this
notable achievement surely speaks well for the team's prospects
next year; and
WHEREAS, Coyotes football is an integral part of the La Joya
community, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge the many individuals
who have contributed to the success of the La Joya High School
Coyotes football team during the exciting 2004 season; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas

season and commend the team's numerous fans in the community for
their tireless support; and, be it further
