R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Matagorda County Teen Court is an important alternative sentencing program for young people that enables those who have been convicted of a Class C misdemeanor to have the offense dismissed if they successfully complete the program; consisting of a trial by their peers, young people receive constructive sentencing requiring them to engage in community service, participate on a teen court jury, write letters of apology to victims, perform restitution, or enroll in a counseling program; and WHEREAS, The program benefits from the interest and involvement of Texas Youth Court Advocates, a group of hard-working youth volunteers who complete training to act as attorneys, jurors, clerks, and bailiffs in the teen court setting; members of TYCA target high-risk youth offenders and take a personal interest in their cases, playing an active role in helping them to take personal responsibility for their actions and rectify the wrongs they have committed, and sending them a clear message that people their own age don't agree with their actions; and WHEREAS, Those individuals who dedicate their time and talents to benefit the Matagorda County Teen Court program are performing an invaluable public service, and it is most appropriate that their good work be recognized; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the Matagorda County Teen Court program and members of the Texas Youth Court Advocates for their efforts to assist young people in forging a brighter future for themselves; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Matagorda County Teen Court program and TYCA as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
