R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students from the Corpus Christi Independent School District's Athena Program at Baker Middle School are visiting the State Capitol on March 30, 2005, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor these notable young people; and WHEREAS, Composed of the top five percent of all students in the district, the Athena magnet program for gifted and talented pupils at Baker Middle School serves many promising young Texans; and WHEREAS, The program's specially trained educators are committed to offering a rigorous and diverse educational experience that challenges students and includes such advanced courses as geometry, algebra, integrated physics, and chemistry; and WHEREAS, This sophisticated academic program is further enriched by theater arts, journalism classes wherein students create a weekly newspaper and yearbook, and art courses which have produced PTA Reflections competition winners; and WHEREAS, Truly an example of a well-rounded academic institution, Baker Middle School boasts an award-winning band, robotic team, chess team, and volleyball team, as well as students who have performed at Carnegie Hall, won national essay contests, and competed in advanced geography competitions; moreover, the school was recently awarded the Technology Immersion Pilot (TIP) Grant by the Texas Education Agency; and WHEREAS, The students of the Athena Program at Baker Middle School may look forward to a bright and rewarding future, and it is a pleasure to honor these fine young men and women at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize the students of the Athena Program at Baker Middle School on the occasion of their visit to the State Capitol and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for these young men and women as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
