R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Cancer takes the lives of more children than any other disease today; and WHEREAS, It is estimated that in North America alone, more than 12,000 children and teenagers will be diagnosed with cancer this year and that one in every 330 young Americans will develop cancer before the age of 20; and WHEREAS, These harrowing statistics prompted Optimist International to establish a childhood cancer awareness campaign in 2001 as the organization's primary focus for the following five years, and the South Central Texas District of Optimist International is actively participating in this vital program; and WHEREAS, With its motto of "Friends of Youth," and a pledge to "provide the care, find the cure," Optimist International has vowed to financially support research leading to a cure for childhood cancer and has teamed up with Johns Hopkins University in this important effort; and WHEREAS, Spreading awareness is key to reducing the burden of disease and improving the quality of life for those affected, and it is fitting that Texans join with Optimist International in its mission to educate the public about the disease, provide assistance for children and their families, and encourage the support of research to find a cure; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 2005 as Optimist International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and commend the South Central Texas District of Optimist International and Optimist clubs around the globe for their laudable efforts to rid the world of childhood cancer.
