H.R. No. 938
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Heron Tamez has been accorded a great honor by the
South San Antonio Independent School District with his selection as
Teacher of the Year for 2004-2005; and
WHEREAS, The award recognizes this esteemed educator's
commitment to inspiring students through innovative and effective
instruction techniques and his leadership in the school, the school
district, the education profession, and the community; he is now
going on to represent the district as a candidate for the Trinity
Prize for Excellence in Teaching, which was instituted by Trinity
University's department of education nearly 25 years ago to honor
and recognize outstanding public school teachers in greater San
Antonio; and
WHEREAS, A Spanish teacher at Dwight Middle School, Mr. Tamez
was raised in the poorest sections of Corpus Christi for most of his
childhood and worked two jobs while pursuing his degree from Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi; he understands all too well the temptations of
gangs and other distractions, making him an ideal role model to his
students, many of whom face similar challenges today; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tamez has demonstrated a commitment to the youth
of the Lone Star State that extends far beyond the classroom; active
in a number of worthy community organizations, he ably serves as the
district coordinator for the Walgreen's One-on-One program and is
involved with the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program, both of which
provide mentoring programs to at-risk students; and
WHEREAS, Heron Tamez exemplifies the highest ideals of his
profession, and his passion for teaching has truly enriched the
lives of countless young Texans; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Heron Tamez on being named the
2004-2005 Teacher of the Year for the South San Antonio Independent
School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
achievement; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Tamez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
